The Royal band of the Belgian Police was founded on 3 October 1946 and has since became the city harmony supporting official ceremonies in Mechelen. 

Tamboer-majoorThe Band currently has about 50 members and has a drum corps. During the hiking concerts and tattoos, the drum major equipped with blue bandoleer containing the coat of arms of the city of Mechelen, is responsible for providing commands to the ensemble, and leads them while marching, and directs them what to play, when to play, and what time to keep. Also the drums carry the Fanions with the colors of the town red and yellow.

 The harmony is supported by skilled musicians from the area near Mechelen. Just as the police officers they carry the prescribed uniform, but with Lyres on the collar, instead of degree badges.

 

wandelconcertThe music band provides initially official and patriotic ceremonies in their own city, but it is also a welcome guest elsewhere in the country.  For a period of 79 years there were some 1132 performances. It was mostly to walking concerts, but equally beautiful kiosk concerts. In addition to domestic performance, the Royal Band Mechelen Police regularly plays at foreign organisers The band performed in Germany, Netherlands, France, Spain and Great Britain.

Since 6 March 2008, Bart Van Buggenhout is the Bandmaster. He is assisted by second conductor Luc Hermans who also plays the euphonium (tenor tuba).
